Applications for Automaticity

There are many applications that assist learners with their automaticity, or fluency, of math facts.  In order to understand these applications and how they work, you must first know that automaticity is defined as "the fast, accurate, and effortless processing of content information" (Dell, Newton, Petroff, 2012).

Educational applications, such as FASTT Math (Fluency and Automaticity through Systematic Teaching with Technology), Timez Attack, The ArithmAttack, and Arcademic Skill Builder, play a key role in achieving automaticity and being successful in the area of mathematics.

  • FASTT Math: A math intervention program that gives students the opportunity to gain fluency in math facts.  "Students progress through the customized series of activities to strengthen memorization of facts and eliminate the need to rely on counting strategies to solve problems" (Dell, Newton, Petroff, 2012).
  • Timez Attack: Primarily focuses on teaching students multiplication facts; the two through twelve times tables.
  • ArithmAttack: Students can play this game online  or can download it for free and assists in the practice and learning of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.
  • Arcademic Skill Builder: These math games were created to assist students in developing fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, integers, and ratios.  Students who play these games can play individually, or play as a team, as the games are built for up to four players.

  1. HI Lauren,

Great list of resources to help with fluency. It's such a basic skill to know certain addition, multiplication etc. facts and for student who struggle with gaining fluency; I am amazed there is so much out there.
